Every Saturday morning, something remarkable happens in the Wellgate Centre. A group of children aged 5 to 12 — many of them born in different countries, some still learning English — gather around tables covered in circuits, cardboard, code printouts and slime, and they build things.
They argue about which bridge design is strongest. They cheer when a circuit lights up. They ask questions their parents cannot answer, which we think is precisely the point.
Why STEM matters for our community
Research consistently shows that children from ethnic minority backgrounds are underrepresented in STEM careers. Barriers include lack of role models, limited access to extracurricular learning, and the confidence gap that comes from not seeing yourself reflected in the curriculum.
The Little Stars STEM Club exists to close that gap — one experiment at a time.
What the children are building
Over the past year, our STEM Club children have built simple circuits and paper bridges, learned basic coding with Scratch, conducted chemistry experiments (the volcano remains a firm favourite), and designed and 3D-printed phone stands.
More than skills, they are building a belief in themselves as thinkers, makers and problem-solvers.

The STEM Club runs every Saturday, 2pm–4pm at Unit 18, Wellgate Centre, Dundee. Open to children aged 5–12. Free of charge. Register your interest through our Get Involved page or come along and speak to a team member.
